FAQs

Common questions.

What people usually ask before getting started. If your question isn’t here, just ask.

Cost and timing

How much does a project cost?

As a guide, brand foundations start at £1,500, websites at £2,800 and online tools at £8,500. Project planning starts at £1,200, a website review at £350, and support is £55 an hour. These are starting prices, not fixed quotes. After a free consultation, I’ll send you a written proposal with the scope, price and timeline. I’m not VAT registered, so VAT won’t be added to my prices.

How long does a project take?

Brand foundations typically take 2–3 weeks and websites 4–6 weeks, counted from when we’ve agreed the brief and you’ve sent your content. Online tools are planned individually, so their timing will be set out in the proposal.

How does payment work?

Projects are usually split 50/50: half before work begins and half on delivery. Invoices are due within 14 days. Larger projects may be split into stages, with the schedule set out in your agreement before work starts.

Are there ongoing costs?

There’s no monthly charge from me if your site is hosted in accounts you control. If you’d like me to host it, hosting starts at £20 a month. Updates and maintenance can be added to a monthly plan. Your domain and any third-party services are billed directly to you by their providers.

Working together

Who will I be working with?

Me. I lead every project from the first conversation to launch, and I’m your one point of contact throughout. Where a project calls for a particular skill, I bring in trusted specialists, brief them and check their work, and I stay responsible for everything you receive.

Who do you work with?

I work with all kinds of businesses, remotely from the UK and beyond. There’s no house style: every brief gets a design of its own, shaped around your business and the people it’s for.

Do I need branding before we start?

No. If you already have a logo and colours, I can work with them. If you don’t, I can create the brand foundations as part of the project before the website is built.

How many rounds of changes do I get?

There are two rounds of changes at each stage, unless your agreement says otherwise. A round means you send your feedback together and I work through it in one pass. If you need more rounds or want to change direction after sign-off, I’ll explain any extra cost before I begin.

Do you write the words and take the photos?

Copywriting can be included in your project. It’s usually best for you to provide photography because you know your business best. If you need a photographer, I can bring in someone I trust and brief them.

What if you’re ill or away?

I plan my work so a few days away won’t hold your project up. If I’m unavailable or a reply will take longer than usual, I’ll let you know straight away and we’ll adjust the timeline together. Your site and files are kept safe and backed up throughout, so nothing is ever lost or stuck with me.

Can you handle personal or sensitive data?

I’ve worked in confidential industries and am trained in handling sensitive data. Petal & Code is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office and professionally insured. My usual setup is to host databases in Frankfurt and back them up. If a project needs a different setup, I’ll explain that. Where I process personal data on your behalf, we’ll agree the data protection responsibilities in writing.

Your website

Can I update the site myself?

It depends on the project and what you’d prefer. If you’d like to change things like text, photos or opening hours yourself, I can set that up. If you’d rather not, I can make updates for you through ongoing support. We’ll agree which suits you in the proposal.

Will my site be found on Google?

Every site is built with the foundations search engines look for: clear page titles and descriptions, fast pages that work well on phones, and a sensible structure. No one can honestly promise rankings, as they also depend on your content and reviews over time, but your site will start on the right footing.

Can you connect tools I already use?

Yes. If you already use a booking, payment, donation or newsletter service, I can connect it to your website as part of the project. If you need something those tools can’t do, that’s where an online tool comes in.

Can you build an online shop?

If you’re selling a few products, I can add secure checkout to your website, so customers can buy and pay online. For a larger shop, I’ll help you choose the right platform and create the brand it uses.

After launch

What support is available after launch?

For 30 days after launch or handover, whichever comes first, I’ll fix anything in my build that isn’t working as designed, free of charge. After that, updates and support are £55 an hour or can be included in a monthly plan. I aim to reply the same or next working day, and I’ll respond to urgent issues as soon as I can.
